Adegoke Steve Colson

Amerikanischer Free Jazz-Pianist, Muliinstrumentalist, Bandleader, Arrangeur und Musiklehrer, geboren am 4. September 1949 in Newark, New Jersey. Er liess sich an der Northwestern University School of Music ausbilden und lebte für mehrere Jahre in Chicago, wo er Mitglied der Association For The Advancement Of Creative Musicians (AACM) war.

Erste Aufnahmen machte er in Chicago als Leader seiner Gruppe The Unity Troupe. Deren erste LP hiess "Triumph!" (Silver Sphinx, 1980). Die Besetzung bestand neben Colson (p, as, oboe, vcl) aus seiner Frau Iqua Colson (vcl), Joseph Jarman und Douglas Ewart (bcl), Wallace McMillan (fl, ts, bars). Reggie Wills (b) sowie Dushun Mosley (dm).

 

Ohne Jarman und Ewart spielte die The Unity Troupe im selben Jahr die LP "No Reservation" (Black Saint, 1980) ein. Es folgten Aufnahmen mit Leadern wie David Murray, Andre Cyrille, Lawrence "Butch" Morris, Bakida Carroll und Kevin Cook. Mit Joseph Jarman (as, fl, vcl), Maurice McIntyre (ts), Malachi Favors (b) und Kahil El'Zabar (dm, perc, vcl) bildete er die Allstar-Gruppe Bright Moments, die das Album "Return Of The Lost Tribe" (Delmark, 1998) einspielte.

 

"Hope For Love" (Silver Sphinx, 2004) hiess eine Aufnahme mit seiner Frau, der Sängerin Iqua Colson. Begleitet wurde das Paar von T.K. Blue (as, ss), Andy McCloud III (b) und Reggie Nicholson (dm, perc). Mit Iqua, Reggie Workman (b) und Andrew Cyrille (dm) entstand "The Untarnished Dream: Music For Trio ... And Voice" (Silver Sphinx, 2009). "Tones For" (Silver Sphinx, 2015) bestand aus Soloaufnahmen.

 

Steve Colson war auch als Arrangeur und musikalischer Leiter für diverse Musikprojekte rund um den Jazz tätig, und war als Musiklehrer aktiv. Er spielte im Verlaufe seiner Karriere auch an der Seite Muhal Richard Abrams, Pheeroan Aklaff, Kelvyn Bell, Ed Blackwell, John Blake, Hamiet Bluiett, Anthony Davis und Richard Davis.

 

Er begleitete Rachelle Farrell, Joe Ford, Chico Freeman, Rafael Donald Garrett, Benny Golson, Michael Gregory Jackson, Craig Harris, Billy Hart, Graham Haynes, Mark Helias, Fred Hopkins, Leroy Jenkins, Oliver Lake, George Lewis, Branford Marsalis und Steve McCall.

 

Weiter war er tätig für Makanda Ken McIntyre, Rene McLean, T.S. Monk, Hannibal Peterson, Rufus Reid, Max Roach, Marlena Shaw, Tyshawn Sorey, Dakota Staton, Henry Threadgill, Steve Turre, James "Blood" Ulmer, Chris White, Ed Wilkerson, Reverend Frank Wright und andere.                          03/25
